Hold the matchbook striking surface down. For stylistic points, you can start off striking surface up then flip the book around.

Open the lid and grab a match. Watch out for matchbooks with stair-step arrangement of matches. The matches in the front row are usually too short.

Press the head of the match with meat of your thumb onto the striking surface. No sweaty thumbs please!

Strike the match, either to the side or up. But first, make sure you have a firm hold of the match book.
